🎓 Gross Tertiary Enrolment Reached Nearly 80% in the UK

In 2022, the UK’s gross tertiary enrolment hit 80%, a considerable increase since 2015, with the removal of enrolment caps placed on universities in the 2015/2016 academic year. However, domestic enrolment is now falling due to rising tuition fees, reduced government funding, and inflation reaching a yearly high of 3.5%. A concurrent increase in university fees amidst an enrolment decline reduces the gross enrolment rate for tertiary education. Alongside the recent decreases in international student enrolment, this may pose further challenges for higher education institutions in the UK.

⚕️ 45% Increase in South Africa’s Out-of-Pocket Healthcare Spend

South African out-of-pocket health expenditure per capita reached nearly $90 in 2022, a 45% increase since 2015. This trend highlights rising healthcare costs for individuals despite a dual public-private system. Amid funding constraints, including USAID cuts, the burden on personal finances is growing. This has intensified the push for greater efficiency through technology, such as the use of digital health services in remote areas. To guide this transition, the Department of Health is implementing its National Digital Health Strategy for South Africa.

🏭 Rhenium Costs Nearly $3K per Kg

Rhenium prices are surging, projected to hit nearly $3,000/kg by mid-2025 after falling to $1,405 in 2021. This V-shaped trend highlights the metal’s strategic value in defense and aeronautics. Rhenium’s unique ability to withstand extreme heat makes it vital for superalloys in jet and rocket engines. With rising global conflicts and China's supply dominance, its price directly impacts military hardware costs. This trend aligns with the International Institute for Strategic Studies' findings on record-high global defense expenditure.
