📖 6.7% Decrease in Singapore’s Education Expenditures from 2010-2021
When comparing across regions, government spending on education in Singapore fluctuated from 2010 to 2021, declining from 18.6% in 2010 to 11.9% in 2020. Despite this decline, Singapore continues to invest significantly in education, particularly in preschool education and the SkillsFuture initiative. Conversely, China experienced a nearly 5% decrease in education expenditure from 2010 to 2020.
In India, this trend was reversed, with government expenditure on education increasing by 4.7%. The primary allocation of funds was towards elementary education, followed by investments in university and higher education. Nigeria and Japan maintained relatively stable levels of government spending on education throughout the decade, with fluctuations of less than 1% from 2010 to 2020 in both countries.
🌾 36.8% Agricultural Land Use Globally in 2020
Global agricultural land use has declined in recent years to a share of 36.8% as of 2020. Increased agricultural land use can lead to environmental degradation, including habitat destruction, soil erosion, and biodiversity loss. Afforestation initiatives aimed at combating deforestation and preserving biodiversity have led to the conversion of agricultural land into forested areas. At the same time, rapid urbanization driven by growing populations has encroached upon arable land, transforming them into urban centers and industrial zones. However, technological innovations have emerged, enhancing agricultural productivity while reducing land, water, and fertilizer use. Precision farming, hydroponics, and vertical farming techniques enable higher yields in smaller areas, contributing to this trend.
🧑⚕️ 2023 Sees Worst Year for Health Data Breaches in Over a Decade
Data breaches have become increasingly commonplace in the current health landscape. In 2023, there were 725 incidents of data breaches in the US, each compromising at least 500 patient records. This marked the highest number of such breaches in a year since 2009. Over this period, there have been several notable data breaches, such as the Anthem data breach in 2023 which exposed the health records of nearly 80M Americans. The attack on Change Healthcare, a subsidiary of UnitedHealthcare, halted payments for many US healthcare facilities as the company handles a third of patient records. On average, the attack cost healthcare providers more than $1B daily throughout the outage, highlighting the worsening impact of these attacks.
