๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ Women Leaders in EdTech

The landscape of EdTech paints a picture of the underrepresentation of women leaders despite women making up the majority of teachers and educators. Looking at the 1000 most promising EdTech startups globally, which HolonIQ identifies each year, the data reveals that positive trends are slowly emerging, signifying a growing presence of women in shaping the future of educational technology. The share of women CEOs in HolonIQโ€™s EdTech 1000 has inched upwards from 13% (2021) to 16% (2022) and 17% in 2023.

Data from EdTech 1000 cohorts show a potential positive trajectory for women's participation in EdTech leadership. The increasing presence of women across diverse sectors signifies a growing recognition of their contributions and paves the way for a more inclusive and diverse leadership landscape in the EdTech industry. If women educators with pedagogical expertise were to increase involvement in EdTech startups, this could shape the future of education by bringing diverse perspectives and experiences to the table. This can help the EdTech industry to double down on producing outcomes, ultimately benefitting learners.

๐Ÿ“Š Charts Spotlight - Women CEOs in EdTech by Sector & Region

Subscribe to HolonIQ's 'Chart of the Day', a daily newsletter that helps explain the global impact economy, from climate tech to education and healthcare.

In HolonIQ's 2023 Global EdTech 1000, women's leadership in sectors like workforce training (23%) and education content (24%) boast the highest figures, highlighting womenโ€™s influence in workforce development and knowledge dissemination. Encouragingly, sectors traditionally perceived as male-dominated, such as advanced technology (18%) and STEAM education (19%), are seeing strengthened participation of women leaders, indicating a potentially broader shift in perspectives and opportunities. However, it's important to acknowledge the persistent gender gap in certain segments. International education (5%) and tutoring (8%) still have a long way to go in achieving equitable representation.

There is also a varied representation of women leaders in EdTech across different regions. While Europe boasts the highest percentage (24%), other regions like South Asia (5%) and Sub-Saharan Africa (10%) have significantly lower proportions. Interestingly, the Middle East deviates from the norm of low representation compared to Health (12%) and Climate Tech (10%), with the region coming in second place (22%) in EdTech.
