🖥️ Tech Futures #1

Happy Monday 👋

This week, LG Uplus and Qualcomm demonstrated a RAN Intelligent Controller platform, while Dell Technologies and Nokia partnered to simplify cloud-native infrastructure integration. South Korea launched the '6G Society' to enhance 6G communications, and Telxius is upgrading to 400G with Juniper Networks’ CORA. Elon Musk's xAI uses the Memphis Supercluster for LLM training, Mistral released its flagship model, and Meta unveiled its 405 billion-parameter Llama 3.1 model. Microchip launched PIC64-HPSC microprocessors for space, and Lambda introduced on-demand GPU clusters. Nvidia approved Samsung’s fourth-gen HBM3 chips. Funding rounds saw Gcore, Harvey, CVanta, and OneStream raising significant capital. Mimecast and Telefônica Brasil made strategic acquisitions.

🌐 Network Advancement Developments

📡 LG Uplus and Qualcomm successfully demonstrated RAN intelligent controller platform. They developed a RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) platform, enabling real-time traffic management and network slicing, allowing operators to deploy AI and machine learning functions independently.

📱 Dell Technologies and Nokia partnered to simplify integration for CSPs and enterprises. This will help CPs and enterprises use cloud technologies, aiming to simplify the deployment of cloud-native infrastructure.

📡 South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT launched the '6G Society' to enhance 6G mobile and satellite communications. The society will serve as a consultation body between the 6G Forum and the Satellite Communications Forum, promoting standardization and technology development.

🌐 Telxius is upgrading its core and edge network to 400G with Juniper Networks' Converged Optical Routing Architecture (CORA). This upgrade simplifies network capacity expansion and improves connectivity for metro networks and data center interconnects (DCI) across Telxius' global footprint in Spain, the Americas, and wider Europe.

🖥️ AI Advancement Developments

🤖 Elon Musk's xAI is training its LLMs on the Memphis Supercluster. The world's most powerful AI training cluster with 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. xAI aims to create the "most powerful AI by every metric" by December 2024.

💡Mistral released a new flagship model, Mistral’s large 2. It excels in code generation and math with only 123B parameters. Mistral focuses on reducing hallucinations and requires a paid license for commercial use.

🧠 Meta’s unveiled its new llama 3.1 model, with 405 billion parameters. It excels in complex instructions and data creation. It supports multiple languages and features a 128,000-token context window. It competes with top proprietary models like GPT-4 and Claude 3.5 Sonnet.

⚙️ Semiconductor Developments

🚀 Microchip launched Pic64-HPSC for space applications. The new PIC64-HPSC microprocessors, integrating RISC-V CPUs, support AI/ML applications for space missions. Designed for autonomy and fault tolerance, they cater to NASA, defense, and commercial aerospace.

💾 Lambda launched 1-click clusters for on-demand GPU access. They offered on-demand access to Nvidia H100 GPUs and Quantum 2 InfiniBand clusters. Companies can use GPU power for as little as two weeks, avoiding long-term contracts and high costs.

⚙️ Nvidia approved Samsung’s fourth-generation HBM3 chips for its H20 GPU.
The high bandwidth memory chip targets the Chinese market amid U.S. export controls. However, Samsung’s fifth-generation HBM3E has not yet met Nvidia’s standards.
