This week in global labor trends, Southwest Airlines announces its first corporate layoffs, impacting 15% of its workforce as part of a broader cost-cutting strategy. Google is investing $120M in AI education initiatives to prepare workers and lawmakers for AI-integrated roles. Singapore’s Budget 2025 allocates $150M to address the digital skills gap, particularly in AI and digital transformation, ensuring a future-ready workforce.

In green skills, Adani Group has launched a $230M academy to train professionals in renewable energy, hydrogen, and decarbonization technologies. Scottish colleges are investing $5M to create a Skills Transition Centre for renewable energy, while Seaspan has committed $2M to enhance Indigenous marine training programs. Advanced manufacturing is also gaining traction. The City of Waco opened a $17M WorkSITE facility, providing specialized training in advanced manufacturing and mechatronics. In the Philippines, the Department of Trade and Industry launched Phase 2 of its skills program to address talent shortages in high-growth sectors like advanced manufacturing. Additionally, Adani Group's partnership with ITEES aims to train 25,000 workers annually through its Global Skills Academy. 

Meanwhile, health skills are seeing a boost, with the NHS delivering over two million additional appointments to improve services and India's plan to send 100,000 skilled workers abroad annually.  Ramsey Middle School is preparing students for future medical careers through its "Health Explore pathway" program, providing hands-on training, and mock clinics. On the digital skills front, Microsoft is partnering with Qatar to enhance digital capabilities, while Google continues to expand its AI-focused initiatives globally. Microsoft is launching a $1M program to train 1M Nigerians in AI and digital skills over two years, with concerns over its $1 per trainee budget.

🏢 Southwest Airlines announces corporate layoffs to enhance profitability. Southwest Airlines, is laying off 15% of its corporate workforce and this is its first layoff since its inception. The affected roles are mainly in the Dallas area, impacting finance, technology, and marketing departments. The layoffs are part of broader cost-cutting efforts as the airline seeks to strengthen its financial position.

📈 Google Advocates for Global AI education for workers and Lawmakers. Google is investing $120 million in AI education programs to help workers and lawmakers understand AI’s implications. The company aims to train individuals for AI-integrated roles through initiatives like “Skilled Trades and Readiness” and the Grow with Google website. Google is also working with community colleges to enhance workforce preparedness, emphasizing AI’s future impact on jobs and regulations.

👷 Singapore Allocates $150M to address its Digital Skills Gap. Singapore’s Budget 2025 introduces a $3B fund focused on driving investment in the semiconductors and life sciences sector. However, the budget also allocated $150M to equip workers with the skills necessary to adapt to new technologies, particularly in AI and digital transformation. It supports both businesses and individuals in acquiring expertise to navigate the evolving tech landscape, ensuring a future-ready workforce.


Green Skills

📚 Adani Group Launches $230M Academy for Green Skills. Adani Group invests $230M in a new academy focused on next-gen green skills. The institution trains professionals in renewable energy, hydrogen, and decarbonization technologies, addressing India’s growing demand for sustainability expertise.

⚡ Scottish College Secures $5M for Green Skills Transition Centre. A Scottish college secures $5M to establish a Skills Transition Centre, supporting workforce development in renewable energy and sustainability. The facility will provide specialized training to equip workers with skills for the green economy.

🚢 Seaspan Invests $2M in Indigenous Marine Training. Seaspan commits $2M to support Indigenous marine training programs, enhancing workforce opportunities in shipbuilding and maritime industries. The initiative focuses on skill development, employment pathways, and long-term career growth for Indigenous communities.

🚗 Al-Futtaim Automotive Certifies Over 1,500 EV Specialists, Setting Global Benchmark. Al-Futtaim Automotive became the first company to certify over 1,500 electric vehicle (EV) specialists, establishing a global standard for EV workforce training. This initiative enhances technical expertise in EV maintenance and supports the region’s transition to sustainable mobility.


Advanced Manufacturing Skills

🏗️ New WorkSITE Facility in Waco to Boost Skilled Workforce Training. The City of Waco, McLennan County, and TSTC have opened the $17M, 34,000 sq. ft. WorkSITE facility to expand access to workforce training. Prosper Waco will recruit unemployed and underemployed individuals, helping them earn industry-recognized credentials. The facility will offer certifications in NCCER Core, OSHA-10, and OSHA-30, mechatronics, advanced manufacturing, and forklift operation, ensuring local workers are prepared for in-demand technical jobs.

🚀 DTI Launches Phase 2 of Industry-Specific Skills Program to Address Talent Shortage. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and TESDA, has launched Phase 2 of the SkillsUpNet Philippines (SUN PH) program. The initiative aims to provide specialized workforce training to address skill gaps in high-growth sectors such as renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, and electric vehicles. This phase will expand on the success of Phase 1, which trained 1,500 workers.

⚙️ Adani Group & ITEES Partner for India’s ‘Largest Skill Initiative’ in Mundra. The Adani Group has partnered with Singapore’s ITEES to launch a large-scale upskilling initiative. The Adani Global Skills Academy in Mundra will train 25,000 learners annually in sectors like manufacturing, industrial design, and clean energy. Equipped with AI simulators and mixed reality learning, the academy will focus on students from technical and vocational backgrounds, offering boot camps and global-standard certifications. Backed by a $24M crore donation, the program aims to provide industry-ready talent for the needs of both the Adani Group and the wider industry.


AI & Digital Skills

💻 Google and Poland partner on AI for energy, cybersecurity. The deal, sealed by Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Prime Minister Donald Tusk, includes expanding Google's operations in Poland, which is its largest engineering hub. Google will invest $5M over five years in digital training for 1M youth. The collaboration aims to strengthen Poland’s security and economy, with major investments from Google and Microsoft expected by 2025.

💡 Qatar and Microsoft partner for digital skills boost. The initiative aligns with Qatar’s Nationalisation Law and Third National Development Strategy (2024-2030). Participants, especially those on the "Kawader" platform, will receive training in cloud computing, IT, and digital transformation to enhance employability and leadership potential, supporting Qatar’s goal of creating a skilled, tech-driven workforce adaptable to market demands.

🦾 Microsoft is launching a $1M program to train 1M Nigerians in AI and digital skills over two years. Led by Microsoft Nigeria with partners like Tech4Dev and Data Science Nigeria, the initiative aims to equip young people for future jobs. However, the $1 per trainee budget raises concerns about training depth. Microsoft hasn’t detailed the program’s structure but plans to build on past efforts. Google is also investing in Nigeria’s AI talent, signaling growing Big Tech interest.


Health Skills

🧑‍⚕️ NHS delivers over 2 million extra appointments. The UK government provided $55.7M in funding to NHS trusts, allowing them to deliver over two million additional appointments for services like chemotherapy, radiotherapy, endoscopy, and diagnostic tests, seven months ahead of schedule as part of efforts to improve the National Health Service.

🧑‍🎓 India is set to send 100,000 skilled workers abroad annually. This initiative will focus on sectors such as healthcare, construction, and IT aiming to tap into global job markets, offering better employment opportunities while addressing workforce shortages under the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) plan.

💉 Ramsey Middle School students get hands-on health career training. Ramsey Middle School's "health explore pathway" program utilizes hands-on training and mock clinics to prepare students for healthcare careers.
