πŸ“Š Charts Spotlight - COVID-19 caused 4+ Months of Learning Loss in Math and Literacy

Subscribe to HolonIQ's 'Chart of the Day,' a daily newsletter that helps explain the global impact economy, from climate tech to education and healthcare.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, school closures caused significant learning disruptions, prompting the need for additional schooling for students to reach pre-COVID levels.

US students required an additional 4.1 months in reading and 4.5 months in math to catch up, with middle school students facing the largest setback, where 8th graders need an extra 9.1 months in math. Learning gaps widened for marginalized students, with Black and Hispanic students compared to their Asian and White peers. Inadequate infrastructure and planning for online learning environments, coupled with limited professional development on integrating technology into teaching, resulted in suboptimal learning experiences for many students.

To address this learning gap, schools are introducing accelerated learning, providing targeted support for grade-level material, and double-dosing, where students simultaneously attend remedial and grade-level classes. Additionally, schools are expanding after-school programs and summer school for extra learning time, while tutoring offers personalized one-on-one instruction to help students narrow the learning gap and return to their academic trajectory.

HolonIQ’s Publisher index has experienced a 21% rise over the past year. The industry's recovery from COVID-era challenges, driven by the shift towards digitalization, has increased sales of eBooks and online subscriptions. Firms ' AI adaptations have significantly impacted the index, with investors expressing positive and negative views about these changes. Significant stocks in the index have begun to adapt to the trend to keep up with the market. Pearson ($8B MCap) announced that it will expand its generative AI study tools into their eTextbooks & learning platforms for university students internationally. Informa’s ($14B MCap) stock prices increased after they agreed on a deal with Microsoft to enhance their AI capabilities. Both Pearson & Informa expanded their share buyback programs, which were supported by strong financial performance.

Smaller publishing companies and individual publishers are affected by AI the most, and content creators are increasingly concerned about copyright protection. The integration of AI in Google's search features and Microsoft's Copilot, along with OpenAI, provides direct access to answers instead of redirecting to the content. This trend leads to a decline in paid subscription users, significantly impacting publishing company sales. Given the mixed market sentiment and the rising demand for study materials fueled by advancements in higher education and EdTech, the index is expected to grow, though it may experience volatile movements in the future
