Medical Debt Burdens New Mothers

🤱 New mothers (18-35) are significantly more likely to hold medical debt (14.3% with >$250 debt vs. 7.6% of peers), creating an economic burden from childbirth-related healthcare costs during a financially vulnerable period.

💸 High out-of-pocket expenses for childbirth, especially with private insurance, and insufficient household savings drive this debt. This exposes families to economic shocks from predictable, yet costly, healthcare needs.

📊 Medical debt among new mothers often correlates with broader financial distress, including credit issues and delaying further necessary care. Potential income loss from unpaid leave exacerbates this economic vulnerability.
