In February 2025, the US oil and gas sector saw significant job growth, adding 4,170 positions nationwide, with Oklahoma alone contributing nearly 1,200 new roles. The Texas oil patch remains the largest employment hub, with 311,747 jobs, reflecting the industry's resilience despite a slight rise in the national unemployment rate to 4.1%. Meanwhile, EV skills in transportation grew by 13% from 2022 to 2023, with a projected 15% increase in 2024, indicating a shift towards greener technologies. Notably, Siemens Gamesa and Hull College are launching renewable energy apprenticeships, and Nepal’s government is launching the "Internal Employment Promotion Decade" (2025-2035), focusing on reducing forced foreign employment and promoting local job creation in sustainable industries.

📈 The oil and gas industry adds jobs in February. The US oil and gas sector saw a boost in employment, with nearly 1,200 new jobs in Oklahoma in February 2025, according to the Energy Workforce & Technology Council. The total number of oil patch jobs in the state increased to 48,684, up from 47,950 in January. Nationwide, the industry gained 4,170 positions, reaching 639,743 jobs.
💨 RWE cuts US offshore wind jobs amid regulatory challenges. RWE is reducing its US offshore wind workforce, citing regulatory and political uncertainties, including delays tied to President Trump’s federal permitting freeze. The company, which holds 5.9GW of US offshore lease rights, previously announced delays to its 2.8GW Community Offshore Wind portfolio due to market risks.
Share of Transportation Industry Workforce With at Least 1 EV Skill
✈️ EV skills are being tracked not only within the automotive industry but also across the entire transportation sector (excluding airlines and aviation).
⚡ The median share of transportation sector workers with EV skills is 0.6%, compared to 4.4% in the automotive industry.
📈 The spread of EV skills in transportation increased by 13% from 2022 to 2023, with a projected 15% growth from 2023 to 2024.
🌏 According to the above chart, the top five countries with the highest percentage of transportation sector workers with EV skills are Germany (1.25%) and Sweden (1.25%).
Upskilling/Reskilling Intiatives
⚡ Siemens Gamesa and Hull College launch apprenticeships for renewable energy careers. Siemens Gamesa and Hull College are offering 30 new apprenticeship roles to build the Humber region’s renewable energy workforce. Starting in Autumn 2025, the program will equip apprentices with industry-leading training, technical education, and hands-on experience. Open to applicants aged 17+ with GCSE Grade 4+ in English and Maths, the initiative aims to strengthen community ties and fuel the UK’s clean energy transition.
🏗️ Wiltshire College opens $625K Green Skills Centre & eco-house with Good Energy. Wiltshire College & University Centre launched a $625K Green Skills Innovation Centre at its Lackham campus, backed by $126K Wiltshire Council’s Shared Prosperity Fund. The centre will train plumbers, electricians, and builders in sustainable energy technologies, including solar PV and heat pumps.
📜 Thailand advances green workforce development with new training initiative. The Thai government, in collaboration with Rajamangala University of Technology, Chevron Thailand, and IAFSW, launched the Green Career online platform to strengthen sustainability-focused workforce development. The initiative aligns with national climate policies by integrating online education, community engagement, and project-based learning in key sectors such as sustainable agriculture, eco-friendly services, and carbon management.
💡 Tata Power & NSDC launch skill initiative for green energy jobs. Tata Power and the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) have teamed up to bridge the skill gap and prepare India’s youth for the growing green energy sector. The partnership will focus on training in green energy, power transmission, and industrial safety. The Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI) will serve as NSDC’s Training Partner, expanding access to hands-on training in energy storage and green hydrogen.
Policy Initiatives
⚡ Nepal launches Internal Employment Promotion Decade. The government of Nepal launched the "Internal Employment Promotion Decade" (2025-2035), focusing on reducing forced foreign employment and promoting local job creation. In collaboration with private sector organizations, the initiative focuses on green skills development to equip youth for sustainable industries. The program aims to enhance skills in renewable energy, green technologies, and other key sectors to strengthen the workforce and support Nepal’s clean energy transition.
