🌎 Green Skills #18

Clean energy employment is gaining global traction, underpinned by policy-driven investments and workforce initiatives. Michigan is investing $3.5B annually with DTE and Consumers Energy to create 167,000 clean energy jobs by 2035.  Sweden and Germany in Europe lead in EV workforce skilling, nearly 10% of their auto workforce holds EV-related skills, reflecting strong policy alignment. Meanwhile, the UK faces setbacks, with a projected loss of 400 offshore energy jobs every two weeks by 2030 without urgent investment, threatening its net-zero goals. On the international front, Indonesia and Scotland’s Aquatera are partnering to train over 1,100 energy workers, while Azerbaijan and China Energy launched a 360MW policy-backed renewable project tied to workforce development.

👷 Michigan commits $3.5B annually with DTE and Consumers Energy to boost local manufacturing and clean energy jobs.  The state aims to add 167,000 clean energy jobs by 2035, strengthening its leadership in advanced materials and renewable tech.

🌬️ UK Offshore Energy Jobs at Risk Without Action.  The UK could lose 400 offshore energy jobs every two weeks—matching Grangemouth refinery cuts—by 2030, warns Robert Gordon University. Without urgent investment, Scotland’s workforce may fall by up to 40%, threatening net-zero goals.

Ohio Ranks 8th for Green Job Growth. Ohio logged 142,429 clean energy jobs in 2023, representing a 2.7% increase, led by the HVAC and clean vehicle sectors. California topped the list with over 640,000 jobs.

EV Skill Adoption Uneven but Gaining Speed in Key Markets

🚗 Sweden and Germany lead in EV skilling within the auto industry, with 9.3% and 8.9% of their workforces holding at least one EV-related skill, showcasing strong policy alignment and early sector investment.

🌍 Indonesia and Mexico are scaling quickly from low bases, both under 2% EV skill adoption, but growing at 21% and 17% annually, highlighting the early-stage acceleration in emerging auto economies.

🔋 India and the Netherlands show significant momentum, crossing the 2% threshold in EV skills with 5.9% and 4.4% respectively, driven by increasing domestic EV production and government incentives fostering talent development.

The UK and US maintain moderate EV skill shares of 8.3% and 4.5%, reflecting steady growth supported by expanding EV markets and infrastructure investments, though still trailing leaders Sweden and Germany.

🎯 Actionable Strategies: To accelerate EV workforce readiness, governments and industry must expand modular training aligned with emerging transport technologies. India’s efforts, like Project INSPIRE, show the impact of partnerships that embed EV, robotics, and mechatronics into vocational pathways. Prioritizing female participation and digital literacy ensures this transition is both inclusive and future-proof. Scaling similar programs globally can bridge skill gaps and meet the surging demand for talent in sustainable transportation.

Upskilling/Reskilling Intiatives

🤝 Indonesia, UK’s Aquatera Team Up on Energy Workforce Skills. Indonesia’s Energy Ministry and Scotland’s Aquatera Ltd signed an MoU to boost energy transition skills. The program aims to train 1,100 PLN staff on renewables, smart grids, and climate leadership, backed by UNOPS and focused on inclusivity and coastal resilience.

⚡ George Mason Opens SMR Training Hub with NuScale. The new Energy Exploration Centre in Arlington features the US’s first 12-module simulator, training students in nuclear operations and clean energy innovation.

🤝 Stellantis India and ASSIST Asia launch Project INSPIRE to train 2,500 students in EV, mechatronics, and robotics skills. The initiative aligns with national policies like Viksit Bharat 2047, promoting green skills, digital literacy, and female participation to boost employability in advanced manufacturing sectors.

Policy Initiatives

🌐 Azerbaijan and China Energy sign policy-backed partnership for 360MW of solar, wind, and green corridor projects. The agreement supports renewable energy development and workforce training, including the 160MW Fuzuli solar plant and 200MW Caspian offshore wind project.

🌱 Uzbekistan launches youth climate leadership project supported by national policies, empowering 1.3 million students with climate education and green skills. The $7.5M initiative integrates climate curricula, trains 50,000 teachers, and advances rural green job opportunities in line with the country’s green economy goals.
