π Energy Futures #42
HolonIQ's Energy Newsletter dives into the latest developments in new energy, utilities, oil and gas, mining, and metals and highlights the week's top skills and energy deals.
Happy Monday π
Global clean energy efforts are gaining momentum, highlighted by significant investments in innovative projects. China is spearheading a $1.5B green hydrogen production facility, while Amazon has committed $500M to nuclear startup X-energy, aiming to develop small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) for low-carbon electricity. However, challenges remain, including recent nationwide blackouts in Cuba, and a substantial decline in Chinaβs steel demand, which impacts industrial energy consumption. Additionally, the ongoing struggle to phase down fossil fuels continues to hinder progress toward a sustainable energy future amid these ambitious clean energy initiatives.
π
New Energy
π China's $1.5B Green Hydrogen Mega-Project. China is making a significant move into the hydrogen energy sector with a $1.5 billion integrated facility in Xinjiang, which will produce 40,000 tons of green hydrogen annually using both solar and wind power. This project, led by Grove Hydrogen Energy Technology Group, aims to fuel 600 hydrogen-powered trucks and support the local electricity grid with a 1,600-MWh peaker plant.
β οΈ Wind Power Crisis Threatens Global Renewable Energy Target. The wind power industry is facing bottlenecks that are jeopardizing the chance to meet the global target of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030 despite accelerating solar deployment.
β‘ Germany Approves $20B Hydrogen Network Plans. Germany approved plans for the construction of a $20B hydrogen pipeline network spanning over 9,000km, including a connection to the Danish border by 2028.
π Utilities
π Australia's Battery Boom Surpasses Solar and Wind Projects. The volume of large-scale battery energy storage projects under construction in Australia exceeded that of solar and wind projects combined in 2023, and this trend has intensified in the current year, with batteries receiving federal support as coal-fired power plants are decommissioned.
β‘ Electricity Crisis in Cuba: Havana Regains Power, but Blackouts Persist Nationwide. Cuba's electrical system collapsed, causing nationwide blackouts for three days. While power was restored in most parts of Havana, the rest of the country remained without electricity as authorities focused on reconnecting individual regions.
β‘οΈ US DOE to invest $2B to enhance grid resilience and capacity. The US Department of Energy announced $2B in funding for 38 projects to protect the power grid from extreme weather and increase transmission capacity.
β½ Oil & Gas
β οΈ IEA Head Warns of Weakening Global Oil Demand. The head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) has expressed serious concerns over weakening global oil demand, citing China's weakening oil demand and an increase in electric vehicle sales as factors that will negatively impact oil demand growth.
β οΈ Countries Struggle to Phase Down Fossil Fuels Despite Global Pact. A year after signing the COP28 agreement, which aimed to phase down fossil fuels, many countries are struggling to meet their commitments and are instead expanding oil and gas production.
π Iraq Signs Gas Deal with Turkmenistan. Iraq signed a deal with Turkmenistan to import up to 20 million cubic meters per day of natural gas, primarily for its gas-fired power plants. The agreement specifies seasonal energy distribution, aiming to diversify Iraq's gas sources to meet energy demands.
π Mining and Metals
π China's Steel Demand Shrinks to Less Than Half Global Total. China's steel demand shrunk to less than half of the global total, due to the decline in the country's real estate sector, according to the World Steel Association.
βοΈ NSW Launches $160M Strategy to Support Critical Minerals Boom. The New South Wales (NSW) government in Australia announced a comprehensive critical minerals strategy, aiming to position the state as a global leader in the sector.
π India's Green Steel Revolution and Renewable Energy Integration. India, the world's second-largest steel producer, faces the challenge of decarbonizing its steel industry, which relies heavily on carbon-intensive methods.
π οΈ Skills and Workforce
HolonIQ is now tracking reskilling and upskilling initiatives critical in bridging workforce gaps. Impact industries are rapidly evolving, fueled by technological advancements, decarbonization, geopolitical dynamics, and socio-economic factors. To that extent, these sectors require considerable workforce/professional development initiatives to enhance workers' capabilities, boost economic growth, and promote social well-being. Read on for this weekβs insights.
HolonIQ has launched the Green Skills Map, an open-source framework initiated to catalog, evaluate, and context components of the rapidly expanding field of green jobs. This comprehensive taxonomy will serve as a resource for understanding the full spectrum and complexity of green skills required across various sectors, thereby enabling a cohesive approach toward achieving net zero and decarbonizing the global economy. Green Skills Map spans 11 areas, 54 sub-areas, and 243 green skills clusters. A snippet of the map covering four areas has been included above. Explore the full map on greenskills.org.
