🚗 Electric Vehicles Landscape
The adoption of EV's are on the rise as a response to road transportation’s impact on global emissions and supported by continuous innovation in battery technology and electric drivetrains. In the past decade EV's have evolved to become viable alternatives for internal combustion engine vehicles in the personal vehicle segment while innovations continue in the heavy transportation sector which has shown promising developments. The rise of pure play EV manufacturers such as Tesla, Rivian and Nio has led innovation in this space and legacy auto manufacturers have responded with a wide range of EV models. The EV-ICE product mix in total new car sales continues to evolve in favor of electrification with some legacy brands planning to go EV only by 2030 while others forecasting a 50/50 split by the end of the decade.

Battery electric vehicles (EV) require a broader mix of minerals compared to conventional vehicles, including on average of over 60 kilograms of graphite and nearly 40 kilograms of nickel per vehicle. Battery EVs also require varying quantities of lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite, and rare earths, which conventional vehicles do not. Manganese and copper are required for both conventional vehicles and battery EVs, however the twice as much for battery EVs.
Notes. Steel and aluminium not included. The values for vehicles are for the entire vehicle including batteries, motors and glider. The intensities for an electric car are based on a 75 kWh NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) 622 cathode and graphite-based anode. The values for offshore wind and onshore wind are based on the direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generator system (including array cables) and the doubly-fed induction generator system respectively.
