🪨 Battery Minerals Landscape

Battery minerals are the essential ingredients that make up lithium-ion batteries, used in everything from electric vehicles and electronics to renewable energy storage. These minerals are classified into what is known as "Critical Minerals", which are defined by specific characteristics that make them essential for modern technologies while simultaneously presenting potential vulnerabilities in their supply chains. Much of these mineral deposits are concentrated in a few countries, and a few others specialize in refining and processing these minerals for end use, thus reshaping modern geopolitics. As countries and corporations ramp up their decarbonization efforts, the role of these minerals has intensified, taking center stage in global trade movements and geopolitics, primarily due to the indomitable presence China has in this sector.

Key minerals include:

  • Lithium: The star of the show, crucial for the cathode (positive electrode).
  • Nickel & Cobalt: Key players in the cathode, offering different performance characteristics.
  • Manganese: Another cathode component, impacts battery cost and performance.
  • Graphite: Crucial for the anode (negative electrode).
  • Rare Earth: Used in specialized magnets for high-performance batteries.

HolonIQ is tracking hundreds of players across the Battery Energy Storage landscape around the world and through Q1 we're launching an enhanced Market Maps feature to explore landscapes dynamically on dimensions important to you, by region, revenue, age, category, and more with subcategorization on any dimension in one click. Stay tuned for the launch!

📊 Charts Spotlight - Mineral Composition of EVs vs Combustion Vehicles and Reserves Of Battery Minerals Worldwide

Subscribe to the HolonIQ newsletter 'Chart of the Day', a daily newsletter that helps explain the global impact economy - from climate tech to education and healthcare. Subscribe to Chart of the Day for data-driven insights on sustainable and inclusive growth.

The last few years have seen an exponential increase in the adoption of electric vehicles and as shown by the above chart, EVs require 6 times more minerals than conventional vehicles. Lithium-ion batteries that power the EV itself require a substantial amount of minerals ranging from Graphite, Lithium, Nickel, Cobalt, Manganese, Copper, etc. Thus, this increase in the adoption of EVs has led to an explosive growth in demand for these minerals, and given the scarce amounts of reserves of some of these minerals, most countries have classified them into what are known as critical minerals.

As shown above, Lithium and Cobalt, which are used in most modern electronics, have inadequate reserves against the vital role it's expected to play in the decarbonization movement. The onset of other battery types such as sodium-ion batteries and atomic batteries, if scalable, will ease the supply chain tensions within this sector. However, at the moment, discoveries of new reserves such as the recent discovery of the 3rd largest lithium reserve in Thailand is expected to somewhat alleviate this issue.

🏆 ANZ Climate Tech 100

The ANZ Climate Tech 100 is HolonIQ’s annual list of the most promising startups working in clean energy, zero-emission mobility, and sustainability.

The Australia and New Zealand Climate Tech 100 exhibited an even distribution across all subsectors, albeit not as much as what was observed in North America and other developed regions. The Food System sector, which recorded the highest growth, registered the highest number of startups, trailed by the Circular Economy and Storage & Distribution sectors, collectively representing half of the list. However, Critical Minerals were underrepresented despite the region's abundant mineral and metal deposits.

2024 Global Climate Tech Unicorn List

This week HolonIQ has updated the Global Climate Tech Unicorn List for 2024, with 35 new companies joining the exclusive list of private companies valued at $1B or more. These companies, combined, are worth close to $320B.
