💰 Turkish Higher Ed Spend Rose 6x From 2011 to 2021
Turkey's expenditure on public tertiary education institutions rose significantly from 12B TRY in 2011 to nearly 80B TRY in 2021. This growth reflects the government's commitment to expanding higher education funding, especially after 2017, due to increasing enrollments and infrastructure needs. These investments align with national educational objectives like Vision 2023 focusing on improving access, quality, and equity in higher education.
🚢 Global Maritime Trade Grew 80% Between 2001 and 2021
From 1990 to 2021, global seaborne trade volume grew from 4B tons to a peak of 11B tons in 2019 before declining as a result of the global supply chain anomalies caused by COVID-19. This rise in figures has created a need to make shipping and logistics more sustainable. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by at least 50% by 2050, aimed at enhancing trade efficiency and sustainability.
⚕️ 40% Less Hospital Beds in Ireland Over 20 Years
Ireland's hospital bed capacity declined from 23K in 2000 to 14K in 2020, reflecting a shift towards outpatient care and shorter hospital stays. This reduction intensified after 2008 amid healthcare reforms to enhance efficiency. Despite recent stabilization, inpatient capacity remains lower, posing challenges for meeting health goals of universal coverage in initiatives like Healthy Ireland. Efforts, including the Sláintecare report and National Treatment Purchase Fund, aim to address healthcare access and service demand.
