π 65%+ Increase in Clean Energy Investments Globally
Global investments in clean energy have increased, surpassing declining trends in fossil fuel investments. Between 2016 and 2023, fossil fuel investments dropped by 5%, reflecting a changing landscape driven by environmental concerns and regulatory shifts. Meanwhile, clean energy investments have experienced growth, expanding by over 60% during the same period.
This growth signifies a shift towards more sustainable energy sources driven by the imperative to mitigate climate change. Clean energy technologies, particularly hydropower, has been the most popular source of renewable energy. Additionally, the emergence of solar power has also emerged as a frontrunner due to its increasing affordability and effectiveness compared to traditional fossil fuels.
Major corporations, recognizing the importance of environmental sustainability and social responsibility, have also joined the clean energy movement. Companies such as Amazon have taken significant steps by investing in numerous solar and wind energy projects, solidifying their position as leaders in renewable energy procurement. However, despite the significant progress in clean energy adoption, the investment boom remains concentrated primarily in developed economies and China. Addressing this disparity, there is a growing recognition of the need for increased investment in clean energy infrastructure in developing countries to ensure a global transition towards sustainable energy.
π° Department of Health and Human Services Accounted for Half of the Federal Research Funding in 2021
In 2021, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) received nearly 53% of total federal research funds, although funding decreased by $1B compared to the previous year. This decline contrasts with the upward trend observed between 1970 and 2020 and the decline may be attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic's impact. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) serves as the primary federal agency for medical, health, and behavioral research within the HHS as it focuses on scientific approaches to address critical health challenges, promoting collaboration across different departments and advancing innovation in tackling twenty-first-century health issues. Funding for healthcare services may have been a higher priority than research funding, causing resources to shift from research to health.
π§βπ« High/Secondary Teacher Planning Time Nears 5 Hours per Week
Compared to high schools and secondary schools, elementary school teachers in the United States dedicated 49 minutes less per week to planning. While core subjects taught in elementary schools require less time, subjects in high school and secondary education are frequently more complicated and specialized, demanding teachers to arrange in-depth lessons that cater to the different needs and talents of older pupils, as well as plan for assessments, grading, and offering guidance on college and career planning, all of which require extended planning time from teachers.
Given the critical role that planning time plays in the larger context of education and learning, variations in the amount of time allocated for preparation may have an impact on student results and the efficacy of instruction. It interacts with variables such as resource allocation, curriculum standards, and socioeconomic disparities, all of which influence education and the quality of learning opportunities for students in the country.
