πŸŽ“ Luxembourg Leads in Higher Education Spend per Student Among OECD Countries

In 2020, Luxembourg spent the most, at around $34,700 per student. The United States was second at $19,973. Mexico and Turkey, spent significantly less, at around $5,200 per student.

Countries prioritize spending differently and this may be due to a lower share of domestic universities, many choosing to study abroad, and higher teacher salaries. Mexico and Turkey spend six times less than Luxembourg which offers some of the highest teacher salaries in the OECD. Enhanced investment in education often translates to improved facilities and heightened student support. Nevertheless, educational quality also hinges on teacher training, curriculum design, and student engagement. Consequently, differing levels of emphasis on these factors across countries could influence the overall quality of education.

πŸ’¨ 31% of GHG Emissions From Livestock and Fisheries

Global food production is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with livestock and fisheries accounting for the highest proportion at 31%. These emissions primarily arise from animals raised for meat, dairy, eggs, and seafood production. Among these, ruminants are prominent methane emitters due to their digestive processes. The environmental impact of livestock farming is intensified by its extensive land requirements, with approximately two-thirds of land emissions coming from livestock essential for grazing pastures. The cultivation of crops specifically for animal feed exacerbates the emissions associated with food production.

Overall, 53% of GHG emissions from global food production can be attributed to the livestock farming process, which not only demands vast land areas for pasturing and cultivating feed crops but also sustains large populations of animals.

🍎 Samsung overtakes Apple as the leading Smartphone maker

Global smartphone shipments increased 7.8% year-over-year (YoY) to 289.4 million units in the first quarter of 2024, with Samsung overtaking Apple and clinching the top spot by selling 60.1 million units and securing a 20.8% market share. Apple saw its shipments decline by 9.6% YoY to 50.1 million units, while Samsung experienced a smaller decrease of 0.7%. The sales at the two companies suffered as Xiaomi and Transsion saw sales increase by 34% and 85% respectively.

Apple's sales decline follows a strong performance in the previous quarter when it overtook Samsung as the leading phone maker, driven by the rising popularity of premium devices and the company’s aggressive trade-in offers and interest-free financing plans. Its downturn is driven by challenges in key markets, including restrictions imposed by some Chinese companies and government agencies, limiting employees' use of Apple devices, mirroring the US government’s measures on restricting some Chinese apps on security grounds.
