💰 Australian HELP Debt Up Over 20%
Australia's Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) debt rose from AUD 22.57B in 2011 to AUD 81.1B in 2024. To address this, the government introduced a 20% debt reduction, raised the repayment threshold to AUD 67K, and adjusted indexation rates to the lower CPI or WPI. Other initiatives include reforms to repayment calculations, the HELP for Rural Doctors and Nurse Practitioners program, and expanded Australian Apprenticeship Support Loans.
🏭 40% Rise in GHG Emissions in India
India's greenhouse gas emissions rose significantly from 1990 to 2020, primarily from electricity and heat production, reaching 1.1B metric tons. In response, the government aims to reduce emissions intensity by 45% by 2030 and achieve 50% of installed capacity from non-fossil sources. Initiatives include promoting renewable energy, enhancing energy efficiency, and increasing forest cover to create a carbon sink of 2.5B to 3B tons of CO2 equivalent by 2030.
⚕️ Uninsured People in the US Declined 50%
The number of uninsured people in the US peaked at 48M in 2010 but fell to 25M by 2023, largely due to the Affordable Care Act and subsequent initiatives like the American Rescue Plan. Despite these gains, challenges remain, including Medicaid expansion gaps in 10 states and rising uninsured rates among children. The Healthy People 2030 initiative aims to improve access, yet nearly 25M still lack coverage as of 2023.
